Immunohematology Technologist I

Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City

 

Provides continuous coverage for the following activities:

  • Serologic investigations and consultations 

  • Procurement of antigen negative donor units 

  • Response to requests for rare donor units from ARDP. 

Supports organizational quality efforts by accepting responsibility for:

  • Reporting any problems relating to the product, process or quality system, and 

  • Participating in implementation of solutions to problems. 


Essential Functions:
  • Prepares laboratory reagents and chemicals 
  • Performs laboratory quality control tasks 
  • Performs equipment maintenance and quality control 
  • Performs tasks associated with red cell and platelet antibody detection and identification 
  • Antigen typing of red cells and platelets 
  • Antibody ID, ABO/Rh, DAT testing 
  • Platelet antibody testing 
  • Problem solving 
  • Identifies, tests, and provides specialty typed red cell components based on client requests 
  • Provides consultation and reference services to clients 
  • Performs patient antibody identification/problem solving 
  • Provides communication with hospitals transfusion service staff 
  • Reports and bills for patient test results 
  • Provides excellent customer service and communication to internal and external clients

Requirements:
  • B.S. Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or other applicable science required 

  • MLS (ASCP), MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required 

  • 1-3 years blood bank laboratory experience preferred 


Skills and Knowledge:
  • Must be able to effectively communicate using verbal and written skills 

  • Must be able to confidently read, write, speak, and understand English 

  • Knowledge of Immunohematology/Transfusion Medicine

Medical Technologist I, IRL (2nd Shift)

Come bring your ASCP Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) license and passion for blood banking to support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross Blood Services. We are looking for a full time Specialist in Blood Banking to work in our reference lab performing specialized testing to serve our local hospital clients.


As a Medical Technologist, staff can expect to perform (in accordance with standard operating procedures and applicable regulatory requirements) basic and advanced donor and patient tests, and interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility. Primary job responsibilities may include:

•         Resolving compatibility problems

•         Providing complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services

•         Performing automated and manual test procedures on blood samples


Other Medical Technologist duties may include:

•         Managing receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples and documenting supply and equipment problems

•         Managing reagent inventory (ordering, receiving, inspection and preparation)

•         Recognizing/resolving testing irregularities and assisting other Medical Technologists in problem resolution.

•         Consulting with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve complex serologic problems and providing special units to transfusion recipients

•         Performing maintenance, repair and validation of laboratory equipment and software

•         Maintaining accurate records

•         Performing manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.

•         Assuming lead responsibilities such as record review and training; assisting in concern management.  – Tech III

•         Performing staff orientation and competency assessments, if applicable. Performing external customer education. – Tech I.

 

Qualifications:

MT(ASCP) or BB(ASCP) /equivalent with 4 years-experience, bachelor’s degree with major in biological science or chemistry plus 6 years blood banking experience, or MLT (ASCP) certification plus 4 years blood banking experience. MT (ASCP) and/or BB(ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
 

JayDoc clinic, a free clinic for the underserved Kansas City population, is open every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening. KCCLMA has been providing free lab work for this clinic for 3 years – something NO other lab professional organization does – but it takes volunteers. All we need is one shift a month.

There are many slots open in April, May, & June. Sign up early so you can choose your evenings.
